ISCC – Certified Biomass and Bioenergy

The ISCC EU is the first and leading voluntary scheme based on the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), covering the environmental and social aspects of biomass production. It is compatible with other RED schemes. In the supply chain, traceability is key to assuring the diligence of the system.

    About the certification

The ISCC scheme certifies sustainable and traceable supply chains that exclude deforestation. It covers the entire supply chain for all types of biomass originating from agricultural and forestry activities as well as waste and biogenic residues, renewable non-biological materials, and recycled carbon-based materials. ISCC applies strict criteria for landscape conservation and requires producers to apply environmentally friendly and socially responsible practices in raw material production.

    ISCC Scheme

Some options of the ISCC Scheme are as follows:

The ISCC EU program, recognized by the European Commission in 2011, verifies raw materials and fuels listed under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) 2018/2001, covering biomass from agriculture, forestry, waste, and residues including lignocellulosic and non-food cellulose materials for producing biofuels, biogas, bioliquids, and low-ILUC fuels; liquid or solid renewable waste and non-renewable gas emissions used for carbon-based fuels; and energy from non-biomass renewable sources for producing liquid transport fuels and renewable gases derived from non-biological origins.

The ISCC PLUS program applies to the bioeconomy and circular economy, covering sectors such as food, feed, chemicals, industrial processes like plastics and packaging, and renewable energy used outside the European Union.

The ISCC CORSIA program (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation), developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aims to prevent and reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector through the use of sustainable fuels. The program is divided into two components: ISCC CORSIA EU and ISCC CORSIA PLUS.

A program that governs the incentive system for sustainable electricity production in Japan, including subsidies for sourcing materials that qualify as biomass fuel. Through the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), specific certification requirements are set for materials that meet the criteria under the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) system.
