Korea Organic Program
About the program
In 2013, South Korea unified the EFAPA and FIPA regulations into a single framework ‘The Act on Promotion Eco-Friendly Agriculture and Management and Assistance of Organic Foods, etc.’ This act aims to preserve agricultural ecology by reducing or minimising the use of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilisers, etc. while promoting the production and distribution of certified organic processed foods.
The main principle of organic agriculture is the production of healthy food from balanced and fertile soil. During both production and processing, organic and non-organic products must be clearly separated, and contamination with prohibited substances, such as synthetic chemicals and non-certified materials, must be avoided. Organic production and processing must be inspected by an accredited and independent third-party certifier, in compliance with the regulations set forth in the relevant inspection system.

Equivalence agreement for processed foods
Since July 1, 2014, South Korea has had an equivalence agreement with the USA, and since February 1, 2015, with the European Union, allowing for mutual recognition of organic certification. As a result, certified organic products from these regions can be exported as organic without the need for additional certification, though specific labeling requirements may apply.
