The verification scheme SURE (SUstainable REsources Verification Scheme) was developed for the supply chains of solid and gaseous biofuels according to the requirements of EU Renewable Energy Directive recast (RED II).

    About the scheme

    RED II builds on the earlier EU directive RED I (2009/28/EC), setting the ground rules for sustainable and climate-friendly biofuels and bioliquids. Since then, global supply chains have grown and connected producers, processors, and end users. These supply chains are certified and monitored to ensure the RED requirements compliance with recognized standards such as REDcert or ISCC.

     

    The RED II Directive (EU) 2018/2001 updates and clarifies the rules from RED I, but also expands them to cover certification for solid and gaseous bioenergy supply chains

    SURE is designed to meet these new requirements. With SURE certification, companies can easily show that they’re meeting RED II standards in their specific area whether it’s solid or gaseous biofuels.

    The SURE system covers a wide range of materials—like agricultural crops and residues, forestry products, wastes, and other biogenic waste. It applies to everything from energy crops, straw, and manure to sawdust, woodchips, pellets, and briquettes. Whether your company is involved in producing, processing, trading biomass or fuels, or using them to generate electricity, heating, or cooling or even trading that energy SURE has you covered.
